Eliciting Voices of Students with Diverse Learning Needs

Our Discovery

Primary school pupils are usually enthusiastic about sharing their views and feelings in class. However, only a few pupils are chosen. On the other hand, there is also a group of pupils who also need more confidence and comfort to share in class. Consequently, teachers are unable to understand every pupil's thoughts, and some pupils stop sharing after repeated disappointments.

Our Innovation

Eliciting Voices of Students with Diverse Learning Needs (EVS) is a set of resources co-designed with the Psychological Services Branch (PSB).
With the use of these resources, we hope to help teachers support students with diverse learning needs (e.g. literacy difficulties, challenges in expression), enable them to participate more actively in class, and build their self-confidence.

Our Impact

Find out how teachers elicit the voices of students with diverse learning needs through the use of EVS in the primary TRANSIT* classroom!
*The TRANsition Support for InTegration (TRANSIT) programme helps Primary 1 students identified with social and behavioural needs to develop foundational self-management skills when they start school.

Sembawang Primary School

Teachers from Sembawang Primary School designed a SLS lesson with the use of poll and supporting image features, ITT and pre-populated student answer (drawing) to further elicit voices of students with diverse learning needs.
"From the (EVS) resource guide, we incorporated the use of the SLS Interactive Thinking Tool (ITT) in our lesson. One of the benefits is that my quieter pupils are more responsive after the use of the SLS ITT." - Special Educational Needs (SEN) Officer

St. Anthony's Primary School

Teachers from St Anthony’s Primary School designed a SLS lesson with the use of poll and supporting image features, and hints to further elicit the voices of students with diverse learning needs.
"The (EVS) resource guide highlights tools such as the text-to-speech function. (The use of such tools) is useful for students with literacy needs as they can listen to the instructions instead of struggling through the reading process." - TRANSIT Teacher
